Foreign Media Highlights Jokowi’s Family Political Dynasty

KNews.id- The eldest son and son-in-law of President Joko Widodo will advance in the Pilkada Simultaneously which will be held on 9 December 2020. This seems to be under the spotlight of foreign media. In an article entitled “Indonesian politics is becoming a family affair”, British media The Economist said Jokowi had vowed that new politicians in his family circle would not depend on him.

This statement was published in Jokowi’s autobiographical book published in 2018. “Being president does not mean passing power to my children,” wrote The Economist in the news uploaded on Thursday (3/12), quoting Jokowi’s words in his autobiography.

The media also wrote that Jokowi seems to have changed his mind, marked by the advancement of his son Gibran Rakabuming Raka and his son-in-law Bobby Nasution in the December 9 elections under the auspices of the PDIP. In fact, both of them do not have political experience and background.

As is well known, Gibran ran for Mayor of Surakarta, a position his father had previously held. While Bobby is running for Mayor of Medan, The Economist then mentions Gibran and Bobby’s candidacy as an “extraordinary” momentum, considering that Jokowi initially refused paved the way for politics for his family.

Apart from Jokowi, The Economist also highlighted other Indonesian officials who perpetuate dynastic family politics. The daughter of Vice President Ma’ruf Amin, who is running for Mayor of South Tangerang, was also mentioned in the article.

Plus the nephew of the Minister of Defense Prabowo Subianto, Rahayu Saraswati Djojohadikudumo, who runs as deputy mayor of Tangsel in pairs with Muhammad.

“Jokowi’s son and son-in-law are not the only people with ties to the presidential palace who are involved in the upheaval (Pilkada). The daughter of the vice president, who is running for mayor of South Tangerang, a city bordering Jakarta, is competing with the nephew of the minister of defense (RI), “wrote The Economist.

Not only that, the British media also highlighted the disappointment of the Indonesian people over the proliferation of dynastic politics in the country. In 2015, the national parliament passed a law prohibiting incumbent families from running for district heads, mayors or governors.

However, the law was deemed unconstitutional by the court and was canceled in the same year. Nevertheless, public dislike persists. (Ade)
