2008, based on the Decree of the President of the Republic of Indonesia Number 7 of 2008 concerning the National Team for the Transfer of Business Activities (PAB) to the TNI, Silmy Karim was appointed as a Member of the PAB TNI National Team. The team’s main task is to transfer business activities directly or indirectly owned by the TNI in accordance with the mandate of Article 76 of Law Number 34 of 2004 concerning the Indonesian National Armed Forces. The TNI is no longer allowed to do business because according to the TNI Law, one definition of a professional TNI is that it is not allowed to do business. This is a task that is not easy because the Team formed by the President of the Republic of Indonesia must take over the sources of income obtained by the TNI outside of the Government Budget (APBN). After successfully carrying out the heavy duty in the PAB TNI National Team, Silmy in 2009 was asked by the Minister of Defense Juwono Sudarsono and the Secretary General of the Indonesian Ministry of Defense (DoD) Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin to join the Indonesian Ministry of Defense (at that time it was called the Indonesian Ministry of Defense).
Although initially Silmy did not have an educational background in the military and defense fields, on the initiative of the Deputy Minister of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia, Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, he had the opportunity to pursue military and defense education. He received military and defense education abroad, from the NATO School in Germany to Harvard University and the Naval Postgraduate School in the United States. Armed with knowledge from the results of this education, Silmy became one of the experts in Indonesia in the field of Defense Management and National Security. At the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia, the first task assigned to Silmy was as an Advisor to the Minister of Defense.
This position began when he was placed as a Member of the Defense Management Expert Team at the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia until 2014. Then in the field of defense industry, since 2010, Silmy entered as a Member of the Assistance Team for the Defense Industry Policy Committee (KKIP). He also helped draft Law Number 16 of 2012 concerning the Defense Industry. His last position at KKIP was Expert Staff for Cooperation and Inter-Agency Relations.
For his services in the assignment at the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia, he received a service star for the Dharma Defense of the Republic of Indonesia in 2014.Silmy is not new to the defense sector, his introduction to the world of the Indonesian military began in 2007. (ARI). Due to his reputation for professionalism, he is trusted by global companies to sit as President Commissioner of PT. MAN Diesel & Turbo Indonesia, as well as Commissioner of PT. GE Power Solutions Indonesia.
