This Year, BSI will Expand to Dubai and Malaysia

KNews.id- The management of Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI) plans to open a branch office in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2021. Business expansion is based on the potential for global sukuk in the Middle East which is considered large.

President Director of Bank Syariah Indonesia, Hery Gunardi, said the opening of branches in the country was due to the potential market. Dubai itself is a country with a Muslim majority population.

“We are after Dubai first because we want to see the potential of global sukuk. The global sukuk has enough potential, and there are quite a lot of it there in the Middle East, “said Hery, Thursday (28/1).

On the other hand, BSI will also expand to Malaysia. Even so, currently the focus is still on the mainland of the Middle East. Hery said, Malaysia is an option, but it is still at the review stage.

He admitted, the potential for Islamic finance in Malaysia, in terms of penetration of Islamic banking, is quite optimal compared to Indonesia. Even so, Mandiri International Remittance (MIR) in Malaysia only serves money transfers from Malaysia to Indonesia or from Indonesia to Malaysia.

“Whether we have an office in Malaysia or not, it really depends on the study. But at least this year we already have plans to have a red office in Dubai. Talking about the potential of sharia and sharia finance in Malaysia, the penetration of sharia banking is quite optimal compared to us, “he said.

Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world, but the penetration of Islamic banking in Indonesia is seven percent, while Malaysia reaches 25 percent.

“So it is interesting. The Malaysian government has provided ample space and support for Islamic banking to grow. In the Islamic banking tax, the rate is quite cheap compared to conventional banks. This is what makes Islamic banking in Malaysia progress faster than in other countries like us, “he said. (Ade)
